Planet Saving Tips

  • Use muesli power - Ride a bike instead of driving. See how many places you can ride. Driving cars burns fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases. The more we ride and the less we drive the more we can emcoolenate* the planet!
  • Buy things that are made locally - Products that are made and sold locally produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than products that need to be transported.
  • Buy things with less packaging - Less packaging means less rubbish and less greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Don't buy things you don't need - Nearly everything causes greenhouse gas emissions while it is being made. The less we buy the less emissions are caused and less waste is produced.
  • Say NO to plastic bags - this goes for when buying everything from groceries to CDs to new computers and clothes.
  • Catch public transport - Public transport often produces less greenhouse gas emissions that driving a car and it can also save you money.
  • Be energy smart - replace a car drive with a phone call, email, or text message.
  • Reuse - What comes before recycle, and after reduce? Reuse! Before throwing anything out or putting it in the recycling bin see if it can be used again - refill plastic water bottles, use old newspapers for pet bedding or paper mache.
  • Recycle - Anything that can't be reused, recycle. Make sure that it can be recycled and only buy things with packaging that can be recycled.
  • Reuse gift wrap - Give waste the wrap and reuse gift wrap, you could also cut out the pictures to make birthday cards or collages.
  • Fix it - Rather than buying new things when something breaks, see if you can fix it yourself.
  • Use both sides of the paper - Cut your paper use in half.
  • Have a planet-saving lunch - use a reusable lunch box, instead of plastic bags, buy large bags of snacks, divide up into lunchtime sizes and place them in a reusable container to save waste, refill a drink bottle with juice from a large carton rather than buying smaller fruit boxes.
  • Be a climate clever cook - don't leave ovens running and fridge doors open when they are not being used, only boil the amount of water you need, and keep lids on pots to keep the heat in and use less energy.
  • Dishwashing Dilemmas - wash dishes on the shortest cycle possible in the dishwasher and only run the dishwasher when it is totally full.
  • Water wise - We all know how we can save water - have shorter showers, get a low-flow shower head, collect water used in your house to water the garden, fix any dripping taps or leaks and make sure taps are always turned off properly. Only use the water you need. See how many water saving actions you can make today.
  • Laundry Lovers - Wait till there is a full load of dirty clothes before running the washing machine, use environmentally friendly detergents, and dry clothes on the clothes line instead of on the tumble drier.
  • Compost - start a compost bin, you can reduce your rubbish and feed your worms at the same time.
  • Grow your own - Using your compost you can grow your own fruits and veggies. Make sure you water the garden early in the morning or late at night to reduce evaporation.
  • Lights, Camera, Action! - Turn off unused lights, use energy saving light bulbs, and open the blinds instead of turning on a light.
  • Hot and Cold - Put on a jumper instead of the heater, wear a singlet instead of turning on the air conditioner and save energy and money on your energy bill.
