Opportunities for indigenous land owners

For indigenous communities and land managers, the carbon economy presents a real opportunity to deliver co-benefits that can facilitate a transition into the mainstream economy without compromising social and cultural aspirations, land rights or the right to self-determination. This potential has been recognized in both the Green paper for the Australian Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme and the Garnaut Review.

In particular, opportunities arising under the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector can provide those indigenous people who aspire to stay on country and care for country to do so while undertaking real employment, with potentially long term income streams. In addition, the activities that can be undertaken to generate carbon revenue provide new options for land use that can be complementary to other commercial or cultural land use practices.

Carbon Planet is currently working across Australia on a range of initiatives to facilitate participation by indigenous Australians in the carbon economy.

Types of services include:

  • Eligibility and feasibility assessments of potential projects
  • Project design
  • Policy and market advisory services
  • Carbon Planet has in place policies that establish a commitment to the environment and social objectives, including the rights of indigenous peoples with respect to the use of their traditional knowledge.
