Carbon Planet is pleased to announce that it will be using the Markit Environmental Registry as the external registry for all its certified carbon credits.
As the global trend in managing environmental assets moves towards carbon price-based mechanisms, a robust global registry is an essential tool in order to provide the required transparency and credibility.
Effective market-based registries are becoming vital as Government tightens environmental restrictions on products and as the voluntary carbon market plays an increasingly important role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
Because of this, the carbon credit industry is moving towards the use of third party registries to store all credits. Carbon Planet is proud of the fact that it’s been using third party registries for all carbon credit transactions since the launch of its online store in 2005. It has also been transferring ownership and retiring carbon credits to its clients from day one.
The Markit Environmental Registry allows account holders to manage all their credits in one place. Credits are audited by the Registry to ensure they have received the appropriate accreditation and to check that they have not been previously issued. In addition, credits receive a unique identification number so they may be monitored through their entire lifecycle. Retired credits are held and can be viewed on the Registry, ensuring the same credits are not re-issued or sold at a later date.
