The Australian Federal Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency has officially re-certified Carbon Planet’s operations and services as being carbon neutral under the soon to expire Greenhouse Friendly™ programme.

We were the first carbon management company ever to have its operations and services awarded Greenhouse Friendly™ certification and today’s re-certification reiterates our commitment to walking the walkwhen it comes to tackling climate change. I mean seriously, would you trust a company that had not bothered to formally neutralise its own services to look at your firm’s carbon management?

The Greenhouse Friendly™ programme will shortly be replaced by the National Carbon Offset Standard and Carbon Planet is already well underway to ensuring that it meets those requirements. As University of South Australia students coming to an organisation we didn’t know much about, it was good to meet the staff in the Carbon Planet office and learn about all the hard work that gets done.

Being Bachelor of Education students, our learning focus was Carbon Planet’s school program, “Operation Coolenation”. We got to read through brochures, newsletter articles and the teacher resources pack. We also came up with some practical implications for the classroom and reviewed some websites related to global warming and carbon emissions.

As pre-service teachers who are almost beginning teachers, it was good to see that the teacher resource books contains background knowledge for teachers as well as the materials needed to conduct these activities with students in the classroom. As pre-service teachers, we often understand the feeling of wanting to learn more about a topic in order to teach it to students, and knowing you have found a credible source to support you is one of the main goals. Being presented with a comprehensive resource on touchy subjects such as global warming and carbon emissions, gives teachers the confidence to present these topics to their students.

Global warming and carbon emissions are an important global issue that students should be aware of as it has a direct relevance to their lives. Carbon Planet provides the link for students and teachers between not knowing and being uninformed, to understanding and taking action.

If you teach young kids then I urge you to check out Operation: Coolenation®. It really is an amazing, award winning teachers resource designed specifically to teach the science of climate change to primary school aged children.

Simon McCabe, Carbon Planet’s Queensland State Manager, gave the above speech the other day at a breakfast ever for Aged Care Queensland. Earth Ride Adelaide 2010 is a FREE community event, held in conjunction with the global Earth Hour, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, including sustainable transport options and encouraging behavioural change among patrons.

Incorporating the outer city squares, Earth Ride – Adelaide 2010 will take bike riders on a car free, entertaining and educational journey through the city streets in support of Earth Hour.

All five squares in the CBD will be themed (Water/Air/Earth/Fire) to coincide with and support the vision of Earth Ride – Adelaide 2010. Victoria Square will have a series of stalls that will be set up to allow participants to meander and learn, not only about the many environmental challenges facing their community (and the world as a whole) but to also take away solutions that will empower each individual to make a small but significant difference.

SA Police will be conducting a rolling road closure for the bike ride, meaning that the ride will take 60 to 90 minutes (ride starting at 10:30am and is expected to finish at midday), giving the riders and other patrons more time to spend in the event village at Victoria Square.

Earth Ride Adelaide 2010 is an event that informs, entertains and motivates Adelaide’s growing community… It’s family-oriented, community-friendly fun for all; big and small, young and old!

Carbon Planet is supporting Earth Ride as part of its Operation: Coolenation® primary schools education programme.

Operation: Coolenation is an effective and enjoyable tool for communicating the science of global warming and climate change to primary school students. The programme was developed as a part of Carbon Planet’s own corporate social responsibility commitments after research showed there was strong demand from students, teachers, schools, and other organisations for clear, simple and accurate information about the causes of, and the solutions to global warming.

Inspiring behavioural change has been shown to be the single most effective way to save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to a create transition to a viable society. The Operation: Coolenation programme was designed to help younger kids understand the science behind global warming and climate change, and armed with that understanding, to take direct, long-term action.

The program provides fun and informative answers in a user friendly format, including the use of the Planet Saving Superheroes: Cyberwind and Aerogreen in a comic series and a comprehensive education resource. The success of the program is also evident in the popularity of school visits which were booked out in the first half of 2009.

Operation: Coolenation is a core scheme by which we will achieve our longer term corporate mission of enabling any business or individual on the planet to manage their contribution to climate change.

The annual Australian Marketing Institute Awards for Marketing Excellence are presented to organisations who have achieved extraordinary success from innovative and effective marketing practices.

Carbon Planet will proceed as finalists to the prestigious 2009 AMI Awards for Marketing Excellence with interstate finalists in the national awards to be announced in October.

G3MS Screen Snap

G3MS, Carbon Planet’s Greenhouse Emissions Measure, Manage, Minimise Suite, is the foremost collaborative carbon management suite featuring simple, yet standards compliant workflows for co-ordinating your carbon reporting requirements. G3MS 2.1 is an evolution to the system and builds on features introduced in 2.0. Mostly this release includes optimisations and improvements under the hood, but there are a few changes to the user interface, based on customer feedback, that will make people’s use of G3MS simpler and faster.

NOTE: Carbon Planet’s techs will be upgrading G3MS over the weekend, between 6pm Friday 14th August and 11pm Sunday 16th August 2009, Adelaide, Australia time. G3MS will be unavailable during the upgrade process.

New in G3MS 2.1:

• Simplified Assessment Workflow – more flexible, less restrictive. The previous workflow system was found to be too rigid and involved too many steps. The new process is simpler and more organic, allowing assessment scope and progress to happen more in keeping with the way people actually work.
• Simplified Roles & Permissions – more intuitive. Many customers found the old Roles and Permissions system a little unwieldy. As part of simplifying the assessment workflow we have remodelled the permissions system to be based around access to information, rather than to actions. This makes for a more consistent user experience.
• Clients Management – improved access to your list of clients. Finally, a ‘Clients’ button on every page that takes you to a list of your organisation’s clients, or, depending on your role, supervisory access to your clients’ clients.
• Assessment Scope – easier to add and remove activities. Another much-requested improvement, now you can add and remove activities easily via the Activities screen.
• Activity Labels – improved customisation and flexibility, without more complexity. How often have you thought, “if only people would label things?” Customise your own labels making them more relevant to your projects and helping you distinguish many instances of the same activity. For example you may have several boilers, the activity relating to each of them is the same but it’s useful to be able to tag them “Boiler 1”, “Boiler 2”, and so on.
• Assessment History – improved accountability. You need your carbon accounts to be bullet-proof. G3MS now lets authorised users trace who’s been doing what per assessment.

The result comes mostly from reductions in staff travel, utilities and third-party services. Of particular note, Canon reduced its air travel by 35% between 2007 and 2008, lowering the associated greenhouse gas emissions by 602 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents.

“We are encouraging our staff and customers to utilise the company’s video conferencing capabilities wherever practical,” said Mike Johnston, Country Manager, Canon New Zealand. “After all, we sell managed video conferencing services so it makes sense both commercially and in terms of social responsibility to utilise this as much as we can.”

The company has also upgraded its entire road-vehicle fleet to higher-efficiency, lower-emitting vehicles in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint. “Reducing emissions means a shift in attitude from everyone at Canon,” said Johnston. “We are encouraging everyone to make environmentally conscious decisions in all aspects of their work, from more judicious print management decisions to turning off equipment when it is not in use. Small behavioural changes make a big difference. We reduced our electricity use by 2.1% from 2007 – 2008 simply by making people aware of their behaviour.”

Carbon Planet has been working with Canon NZ for a couple of years now, providing the GHG Assessment services they need to track their emissions, and the recommendations of the most cost-effective changes they can make to act on those assessments. Their hard work is paying off and that’s awesome to see.

The book aims to recast the debate on climate change from one of fear and problems to one of hope and opportunity. It contains a collection of essays from key politicians, investors, business people, activists and academics on how to make the most of the current predicament. The authors include the Hon Greg Hunt MP, the environment spokesperson for the Federal Opposition, Professor Sir David King of the University of Oxford, Bill Mckibben, the renowned American author, and Tenke Zoltani who works with Lord Nicholas Stern in London.

…and me. As someone who can be counted on to take a positive view on most things, John O’Brien. the editor, asked me to contribute a chapter in the section on business opportunities. My chapter is called “Reasons to be Cheerful,” and, alas, some of it was out of date before the book came out. The carbon industry is like that though.

The book is being launched in seminars around the country. I spoke at last week’s Sydney seminar, harking back to my youth as a door-to-door sales person in rural Australia and making the connection between occupational health and safety legislation and climate change laws. I’ll be speaking in Melbourne this coming Friday if people want to come along and hear me, and a handful of others, talk about just why we are not doomed, why business can save the planet, and why carbon trading is an essential part of the long-term solution.
