Earth Ride Adelaide 2010 is a FREE community event, held in conjunction with the global Earth Hour, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, including sustainable transport options and encouraging behavioural change among patrons.

Incorporating the outer city squares, Earth Ride – Adelaide 2010 will take bike riders on a car free, entertaining and educational journey through the city streets in support of Earth Hour.

All five squares in the CBD will be themed (Water/Air/Earth/Fire) to coincide with and support the vision of Earth Ride – Adelaide 2010. Victoria Square will have a series of stalls that will be set up to allow participants to meander and learn, not only about the many environmental challenges facing their community (and the world as a whole) but to also take away solutions that will empower each individual to make a small but significant difference.

SA Police will be conducting a rolling road closure for the bike ride, meaning that the ride will take 60 to 90 minutes (ride starting at 10:30am and is expected to finish at midday), giving the riders and other patrons more time to spend in the event village at Victoria Square.

Earth Ride Adelaide 2010 is an event that informs, entertains and motivates Adelaide’s growing community… It’s family-oriented, community-friendly fun for all; big and small, young and old!

I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to write on climate change and other topics for several years now, but I’ve never really thought of myself as a journalist. But the UNFCCC, in their wisdom, thought otherwise, so here I am in Copenhagen as an official UN accredited journalist, correspondent and photographer for this the 15th conference of Parties to the UNFCCC.

There is no shortage of ways to cover COP15 assuming you can’t get here. The first place to look for real-time news just has to be Twitter these days. Search for the hashtag #COP15 for example and you’ll get posts from media within the event, and posts containing the hopes, wishes, fears and frustrations of the millions who are not there but who have an opinion.

Similarly search for the COP15 tag in Flickr and you’ll get photos from the event. Over at YouTube a search for today’s videos about COP15 will keep you current.

Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sent a message to the COP15 community via YouTube to urge action on climate change and called for more grass-roots action at regional level in the fight against climate change.

While I laud this attitude, community action is not going to restructure the economy fast enough. Strong fuel efficiency laws, subsidies for renewable energy generators and a sunset on coal mining as part of a global ban on the sale of coal by 2020 are probably going to have more direct effects.

At the rate solar power is growing, humanity will be generating more power from solar sources than it actually uses by, optimistically, 2020, but pessimistically, 2030. We can fuel our lifestyles on solar power, and hanging on to the old dirty technologies of the past, and allowing the world’s forests to be ripped up is foolishness. — DS

The Australian Youth Climate Coalition is kicking goal after goal. Their latest project, PowerShift, a national conference for youth concerned about climate change, promises to be a seminal event in the Australian Youth calendar. The event is being held at the University of Western Sydney, Parramatta Campus from Saturday 11 July to Monday 13 July 2009.

What’s happening

Trainings: Conference attendees will learn the best practices of climate organising, including: campaign and event planning, recruitment, media, public speaking, lobbying, leadership development, coalition-building, campaign strategy, and community and campus organising.

Keynote Speakers & Bands: Attendees will be energised by leaders of the climate movement in Australia and worldwide. Speakers include Dr Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers, and Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Well-known Australian artists will help us celebrate our movement to solve climate change with a Saturday night concert.

State/Regional Break-Outs: After splitting into geographically-based groups, youth will identify upcoming state and regional opportunities to realise tangible climate progress and plan coordinated campaigns and events to make them happen. We will also facilitate the coordination of upcoming youth actions on climate change across the country.

Presentations: Diverse speakers will enlighten youth about the connections between Climate and Faith, International Security and Climate Change, How Combating Climate Change Leads to Job Creation, Climate Change from Indigenous peoples’ Perspectives, and many more presentations that will help build our movement and add new perspectives to the discussion.

Green Job Fair: Employers on the cutting edge of our energy transition will meet youth looking for the jobs of tomorrow in non-profit, clean energy, and other sustainably-focused sectors. We have invited the Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard to open the career fair.

2010 and Beyond: Leaders of all major parties – candidates for the Prime Minister of Australia at the next election – have been invited speak to their plan to reduce Australia’s GHG emissions to safe levels, forcing them to justify their policies to the generation that will be most affected by them.

Powershift defies the contemporary view of youth as a bunch of Gen-Y slackers looking shortcut their way to the top. The event has been planned meticulously and seeks to truly inspire informed behavioural change across the country. I know many young people who really do see their future imperilled by the policies of their elders, and who see the best hope for change being their own actions. Hockey fans concerned about the future of outdoor hockey across Canada took to the ice last week to play a game of hockey meant to raise attention about global climate change.

“The ‘Save Hockey, Stop Climate Change Campaign’…is bringing about awareness to the fact that climate change is affecting all sorts of different things, to our food source, to our water source, to our outdoor hockey sports,” says Leah Henderson, one of the event’s organizers.

The impact of global warming on winter sports has long been a topic of discussion by environmentalists and sports enthusiasts alike. The U.S.-based World Resources Institute has warned that global warming is threatening the future of Winter Olympic Games in this century, because it is resulting in “less snow, and shorter and warmer winters.”

A study presented by University of Zurich researchers at the 2003 World Conference on Sport and the Environment in the city playing host to this year’s Winter Games, Turin, reported that the levels of snow falling in lower-lying mountain areas will become increasingly unpredictable and unreliable over the coming decades.

In Turin, environmental activists were hopeful that the first anniversary of the Kyoto treaty be honoured by turning down the gas-hungry Olympic flame, but their request was rejected by the organizers who said the flame might go out completely if was turned down.

The Olympic organizers in Turin have however been praised by some environmentalists for their bid to offset the additional carbon dioxide emissions brought about by the games by investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy schemes.

A Walk Against Warming will take place on 3 December 2005 in major cities in Australia.

The Walk Against Warming is the Australian part of a globally coordinated set of international demonstrations on climate change on 3 December 2005 organised by the Global Climate Coalition.

So no matter where you are in the world, here’s a chance to express your concern about Global Warming in a form that will help draw media attention to the issue.

The Asia Pacific Regional Director of the United Nations Environment Programme, Surendra Shrestha, will be the keynote speaker at the lecture on sustainable development hosted by UNSW’s Kensington Group.

He will be joined by Australian Federal MP Malcolm Turnbull who will be discussing the Sustainable Cities report launched recently by the House of Representatives Environment Committee.

What does it take to change people’s behaviour? We already see the signs of global warming yet are we making the requisite cuts to greenhouse gases? We are already paying dearly at the petrol pump but are we leaving our cars behind? What is government’s role? What is our role as individuals?

“Surendra Shretha is an inspiring speaker who brings a global perspective to a topic critical to our future,” said Kensington Group chairman Professor Deo Prasad. Australia is one of the most urbanised countries in the world and our cities face enormous challenges, with water shortages, transport congestion and high-energy demands.
