Carbon management and Corporate Social Responsibility

Slides from the talk I gave to the CSR special interest group of the AIM

Last night I was privileged to be able to give a talk to the Corporate Social Responsibility special interest group of the Australian Institute of Management. The organisers claim that it was one of the most well attended talks they have had with around 90 people RSVPing.

They asked me to address the following topics:

  • How can an organization assess its carbon footprint?
  • How can managers decide where to start in reducing their organisation’s carbon footprint?
  • How can managers best make the business case for reducing their organisation’s carbon footprint?
  • How does being green or being sustainable fit with corporate social responsibility?
  • Are they typically part of the same program in an organisation or separate programs? What works best?
  • What is involved in carbon pricing and carbon trading and what are likely to be the impacts on organizations and industries of carbon trading in Australia?
  • What can managers do to increase the readiness of their organisation to make the changes that are involved in becoming carbon neutral?

The slides at the top give you a basic outline of my speech but alas it wasn’t recorded. I talked a lot about the various standards such as the WCSBD’s GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard and ISO 14064-1 for assessing carbon footprints, and spoke in some depth about the concerns that the ACCC has raised in terms of green-washing and people misrepresenting their own carbon neutralisation efforts. I discussed the introduction of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 and the kinds of businesses that would be impacted by this in both the short and mid terms.

Obviously this would all be better if you had been there and next time I’l try to make sure someone videos the talk. If you’d like me to come and explain any of this stuff in person please get in touch with us. — DS
