Carbon Neutral Car Racing
Carbon Planet has been appointed to work with the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar motor race in a three year contract to audit the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the race, to make on-going recommendations as to how the race can reduce its global warming impact, and to supply sufficient certified carbon credits to ensure that any emissions that remain will be properly offset, rendering the event truly carbon neutral.
In a packed event launch the Honourable Kevin Foley, Deputy Premier of South Australia, where the race is held, and where Carbon Planet is headquartered, made the announcement to rapturous applause.
“We are pleased to be making this announcement to coincide with the Clipsal 500’s 10th birthday, which will be held from 21st – 24th February 2008, Mr Foley says.
“The audit will measure the carbon footprint of the event and all associated activities and it would identify where emissions can be reduced,” Mr Foley says.
“The program will also calculate the number of carbon credits required to offset the global warming impact of the event and will include the sourcing and sale of carbon credits once the audit has been completed.
“Where possible carbon credits will be purchased within South Australia.”
Carbon Planet is an Adelaide-based carbon reduction consultancy that provides scientific and engineering solutions to carbon emissions management and which retails carbon credits to individuals and organisations that wish to offset their carbon dioxide emissions in order to reduce global warming.
Jim Johnson, Executive Chairman of Carbon Planet says he is thrilled to have the Clipsal 500 on board.
“The Clipsal 500 is a key part of Australia’s sporting calendar and Carbon Planet is pleased to have been selected to assist the organisers to eliminate associated greenhouse gases,” Mr Johnson says.
“By starting the three step process of measure, reduce and offset, the Clipsal 500 is setting a commendable standard for other major sporting events.
Mr Foley says the sporting event organisers and Board should be commended for their leadership, which will result in all activities under the control of the Clipsal 500 Adelaide event being CO2 free™
Car Racing is an important part of Australia’s cultural identity and its excellent that the event is taking its social responsibility commitments seriously. — DS
