U.S. bars talk of climate change effects on bears

The Seattle Post Intelligencer is reporting U.S. bars talk of climate change effects on bears.

The Bush administration is ordering federal wildlife officials headed for international meetings on polar bears not to talk about how climate change and melting ice are affecting the imperiled animals.

It is the latest in a string of cases in which the administration has carefully controlled or even banned government employees’ public speech about global warming.

This latest chapter involves two memorandums written in late February that put strict limits on what U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees could discuss at meetings in Norway and Russia.

A third memo says the policy will apply for trips to those two nations as well as Canada and “any northern country.”

Weak isn’t it. The USA’s paranoid government more and more resembles, to me as an outsider anyway, the corrupt old USSR. Corporate agri-business is not unlike collectivised farming; the Gulags, well okay people are not being rounded up and shipped off into an archipelago of forced labour camps. But this suppression of scientists is simply outrageous and anathema to the values the USA once held dear. The beacon on the hill glows dimmer these days it seems. History will not judge their government well. Don’t trust your government, or big business, or the mainstream press. Climate change is real and becoming as obvious as the balls on a dog. You can be the planet saving super-hero the world needs. And you don’t need anyone’s permission. — DS
