Climate change worsening fire risk

The Australian is reporting Climate change worsening fire risk.

[Australian] PRIME Minister John Howard must accept climate change will increase bushfire outbreaks or risk further tragedy, a policy research institute says.

Mr Howard yesterday brushed off a report by the Australia Institute linking a rise in the number and intensity of bushfires to the effects of climate change.

He described it as an “esoteric debate”.

What does he think happens when the average temperature rises? You only need to look out your window in Australia to see the disaster looming. Sure fire is, and always has been, an essential ingredient in Australian forests; many native trees will not germinate without the heat of a forest fire. To deny that global warming is linked to more fires of greater intensity is just being belligerent, nay recalcitrant. — DS
