Stamp duty relief to underline need for zero-carbon houses

In the UK The Times is reporting Stamp duty relief to underline need for zero-carbon houses.

Newly built zero-carbon homes will be exempt from stamp duty from April for at least three years, Gordon Brown announced.

The move is intended to give impetus to investment into zero-carbon communities — 27 per cent of carbon emissions in Britain come from homes — and it is intended that no new home built after 2016 will contribute to climate change.

This is a great leap forward in my opinion. Now only will zero-carbon homes be cheaer to run, due to reduced energy expenses, but the exemption from stamp-duty should encourage property developers to build them in the first place. This makes it more likely that rented accommodation will also be greener. — DS
