Christchurch sells carbon credits for $3 million
Radio New Zealand informs us Christchurch sells carbon credits for $3 million.
The Christchurch City Council has sold its carbon credits to British Gas for $NZ3 million.
The 200,000 credits were awarded to the Council by the Government in 2004 through the Projects to Reduce Emissions Programme – under the Kyoto Protocol.
The council had devised a way to capture and transport methane gas from the closed Burwood Landfill to the city’s QEII Park, to heat and power the sports facility.
Christchurch City Council is to be commended for this move. These are the sorts of opportunities that Australia and the USA are missing out on because of their abject failure to ratify Kyoto. — DS
