Global warming is no commie plot

Phillip Adams’ editorial in The Australian reminds us that Global warming is no commie plot.

A few ideological fundamentalists from right-wing think tanks still believe that any climate change that may be occurring is not only natural but probably beneficial. However, their endless recycling of the views of the 2.5 scientists on Earth who think the CO2 figures a leftist pipe dream has the doubting Toms disagreeing with minor outfits such as NASA and the Pentagon. Not to mention an insurance industry forced to pick up pieces of falling sky. And as Gore points out, more and more corporations see a quid in the climate.

On the Right of politics, what passes for risk assessment seems surreal. You’ve probably noted that many climate change sceptics among the commentariat are the greatest enthusiasts for the war against terror, demanding extremism in the face of a comparatively small risk while branding Gore an extremist for calling the world’s attention to what may prove to be the ultimate calamity.

The sceptics are still flailing about in their own froth, but no-one takes them seriously anymore. Every business leader we speak to here agrees that global warming poses a huge threat to their business interests and the costs of doing something about it dwarf the potential costs of doing nothing. — DS
