BP targets green consumers with carbon-offset scheme for drivers
The UK’s Independent is running a story BP targets green consumers with carbon-offset scheme for drivers.
BP will raise the stakes in the battle to be seen as the most environmentally friendly oil company today, launching a website which allows motorists to offset the carbon emissions from their car by donating money to the development of renewable energy sources.
One has to wonder why you’d want to donate money to BP. Their approach highlights the core difference between the service Carbon Planet offers, and most other outfits claiming to deal in carbon credits. Carbon Planet retails certified carbon credits. This means that when you give us your hard-earned money, we give you carbon credits. We don’t take your money as a donation and promise to invest it in green energy projectsl; we leave that to charities. If you want to just give your money away that’s your business. Our business is retailing properly accredited carbon credits.
I just have to add too that the easiest way to reduce your vehicle based emissions is to simply not drive so much. Buy a bike, or walk that 500 yards to the shop. It’s good for you and saves you money. But BP would never advocate that would they: Beyond Petroleum indeed. Pah. — DS
