Hot hot hot
It’s hot here in Europe. Damn hot. In fact it’s just after 11pm here in Amsterdam and the thermometer in the street says its 27 degrees C. In the UK, The Independent is saying Temperature set to hit 100 degrees – and global warming is to blame.
With the mercury expected to approach 100F (37.8C) for only the second time in Britain’s history – but also the second time in under three years – researchers said the unusual heat was entirely consistent with predictions of climate change caused by rising emissions of greenhouses gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) from power stations, motor transport and, increasingly, aircraft.
We’ve been shutting windows and curtains at home during the day just so that the heat at night is not so stifling. I’ve not had to do that since I lived in Adelaide where the summers can get to the mid 40s. But in Adelaide, where Carbon Planet is based, the buildings are built for the heat. It’s a desert city. Here in Europe buildings are built to keep the heat in. But it’s not just people’s homes heating up;
Temperatures on buses in the hottest parts of Britain hit 52C yesterday while the London Underground reached 47C. EU guidelines state that cattle should not be transported at temperatures exceeding 27C.
I for one dread the idea of being stuck in the London Tube in 47C degree heat. — DS.
