Massive chunk falls from Eiger mountain

Yahoo is running a story, Massive chunk falls from Eiger mountain.
To sum up, huge chunks of rock on the Eiger Mountain in Switzerland have been crumbling in recent days because the glacial ice that had been holding it together has melted.

20 million cubic feet of stone from the east face of Eiger mountain fell hundreds of feet in a 15-minute avalanche. A 100-foot-high rock formation on the Eiger known as the “Madonna” collapsed earlier last Thursday.

More and more we are relaising, too late in many cases, just how important glaciers are to life as we know it. — DS (digg it)
