Global Warming: What You Need to Know

The people at Discovery Channel sent me a review screener of Global Warming: What You Need to Know. It screens tomorrow.

The content of the show is largely sourced from David Attenborough’s recent Climate Chaos special on the BBC, but with a new narration and a lot of earnest looks by Tom Brokaw.

Where Attenborough’s journey is quite a personal one, Brokaw’s show is a fairly clinical presentation of the facts of global warming and climate change. I enjoyed it and the coverage it affords NASA climate specialist James Hansen and other scientists giving their various interpretations of the known facts.

The show hand-holds you through the basic arguments, explains the connection between CO2 levels and global warming, and concludes on an up-beat note with sensible advice on how we can all minimise our CO2 emissions before it’s too late. There is some spectacular footage that all serves to alarm, inform and put climate change issues in context. Much of that footage you will be familiar if you’ve already seen the BBC’s show.

The show doesn’t mention carbon credits or emissions trading at all in its basket of ’solutions’ preferring the ‘leave it to technology and hope’ approach.

GLOBAL WARMING: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW premieres Sunday, July 16, 9-11 PM on the Discovery Channel.
