From The Scotsman: 4×4s penalised to save planet
A new top-rate vehicle tax will be created for cars registered [in the UK] from today that emit the most carbon dioxide, with increases for those in the next highest band.
To encourage greener motoring, the tax is being abolished for the cleanest cars - although these numbered just 40,000 in 2004 - and cut or frozen for those in the lower emission bands.
Well it’s a fine start and I imagine that was no simple law to get passed. The article goes on to say that it’s a ‘token gesture’ but at this stage a token is better than no gesture at all, and it opens the way for a much more aggressive stance against those who would poison our planet just so they can sit a little higher on the road. Got a friend who drives an SUV? Encourage them to offset their emissions if they won’t see sense and swap that beast for a more sensible car. As Tim Flannery points out in his book “The Weather Makers“, SUV drivers can cut their personal CO2 emissions by 70% just by changing cars. - DS
